“Dark, seductive, and beguiling with a bite, Societi Bistro’s Robyn Cooke pasta is as bold as its namesake, ecommerce wiz and all round style guru, Robyn Cooke. In anticipation of the launch of this delectable dish we recently caught up with Robyn for a Q&A”
What was your dream job when you were growing up?
Growing up I dreamed of becoming a prima ballerina or fashion editor. When I became a fashion editor I found that it didn’t offer me the pace or challenge that I desired. Luckily for me the world changed, the Internet was invented and I found a much more suitable and challenging career in ecommerce. The thrill is in creating something completely new and exciting; that you know will become an integral part of everyone’s daily lives within a short period.
What is your favourite question to ask a prospective employee?
I have always had a philosophy that you should only employ young people who have held positions in the service industry. It equips young prospective employees with invaluable skills in salesmanship, interaction with a wide variety of people from all walks of life, working under pressure and within a team. When it comes to any job I value these attributes much higher than any degree or qualification.
What is your favourite leisure activity?
I am obsessed with walking along the Sea Point promenade. It’s not so much exercise for my body, but for my mind. On a gorgeous Cape Town summer’s day it is a fantastic social activity and the perfect setting for snapping those perfect Instagram shots.
Who is your favourite South African fasion designer?
My heart lies with KLuK CGDT, but lately I have been filling my wardrobe with fun pieces from Jenny LeRoux’s HABITS.
How do you feel about appearing on the Societi Bistro menu and your dish in particular?
I see my dish as one possessed of twisted, dark humour, much like myself. Of course I was extremely honoured and delighted when it was named for me.
Any memories you would like to share about Societi Bistro?
Societi Bistro is my home from home. It is always my first choice when I am eating out on any occasion, and where I am very likely to find my friends, even if I pop in spontaneously. As I couldn’t move in I did the next best thing and put myself to work there!
